This was my submission for stash busting week on So you think you’re Crafty. Here is the tutorial to build your own pallet planter!
This week for the stash busting challenge, I knew that I wanted to get rid of stuff. I had an obscene amount of pallets leftover from another project. It took me hours to rip the boards off. My hamstrings were sore the next day from all of the squatting. Let me tell you, if you see something made out of an old pallet, it was probably hard work!
The first thing I did was build a frame out of 2×4’s. I put a planting pot in the middle to gage how big I wanted it to be. That’s the beauty of this project, you can make it any size you want!
Where you see the arrows you will need to screw the 2×4’s together. The shorter 2×4 doesn’t need to be screwed in unless you just feel the need to do so. I used it as a guide for how big I wanted the planter and will use it again later. Now you should have two separate sides.
Now lay down one of the sides and measure the width to cut the pallets to size. Then start nailing them in. Do both sets of 2×4’s.
Now both sides should have the pallets nailed to them with two sides open. I left the top portion undone because the board didn’t fit perfectly and I was unsure what I was going to do. I ended up just nailing another pallet board to the top and it sticks above the 2×4’s. No biggie!
Now lay the two sides over. I used the 2×4 as a spacer to nail in the pallets on the other two sides.
Here you can see where I added the final board’s around the top.
Next, flip your box over. Measure the pallet boards and nail them into the bottom.
Whew, now your box is built!
I chose to stain my planter a red mahogany. After I stained it, I roughed it up with my sander. You could do whatever you like, paint it, stain it, or leave it as is!
These old casters came off of a dresser that I got at an estate sale.
I taped the wheels off and gave them a coat of oil rubbed bronze spray paint. It should have been labeled black spray paint. I was not seeing any oil rubbed bronze!
Screw in the casters to the bottom.
To make my fern be at the top of the planter, I added a 5 gallon bucket, stacked a few 2×4’s and the put a planter pot on top.
I just plopped the fern in the planter pot. I didn’t even repot it. I just used the hanging basket that it came in and snipped off the hanging part!
It is the perfect filler for my porch!!
It’s rustic and chippy. Just how I envisioned.
And now that I have this fabulous new planter, I must keep the plant in it alive!! Yikes!
